An interview with Christian Schroder, Swiss Hotel Management School alumnus
Christian’s background is varied to say the least. Before getting into the hospitality industry in 2010 he attempted to become a photographer due to his love of social settings and mastered his way in the world of bartending in London. But how did the passion for photography and bartending in London lead him to the shipping industry?
After several internships throughout London he eventually got a job as a bartender in a small bar in South Kensington and quickly picked up new skills and realized that that line of work suited him.
- I quickly started clocking up the hours and became successful in a line of work where my job varied on a day-to-day basis. I eventually got my personal license and became head bartender within 10 months. I had finally found an industry which I was passionate about and that I loved, so putting all of those factors together meant I had no choice in my mind but to study hospitality.
Christian realized that, if he wanted succeed, having his GCSE's, A-Levels and an Art Foundation diploma probably wasn't going to be enough to get where he wanted to go. He chose Swiss Education Group, and in particular SHMS, because of the location of the two campuses in Caux and Leysin as he had spent time skiing nearby when he was younger.
“Lets face it! Who wouldn't want to study in such amazing locations, and having access to world-class facilities? I now have a BA in Hospitality and Events Management and I have made friends for life at SHMS, in what is, most likely, the most important chapter of my life so far.”
Currently, Christian is working for C Transport Maritime as a Dry Bulk Shipping Trainee. By using his networking, socializing and research skills that he was taught at SHMS he found his dream job and has now been here for a year.
- C Transport Maritime is a world leader in the world of Dry Bulk Shipping, and I felt there was no company where I could better learn about this industry and grow within it.
Christian has high aspirations for the future but for now he is planning on staying in shipping and perhaps moving into the world of ship broking. But for now that is still a while off and he still has much to learn at C Transport Maritime.
- I aim to repay the faith and goodwill they have shown me. For now, my future aspiration is to stay with the company for as long as they will have me and hopefully to forge a successful career within the company.
