There was much excitement and energy on the Caux campus as it hosted the inaugural TEDxSHMS under the theme "Welcoming Disruption".
Inspired by the worldwide phenomenon TEDx Talks, six guest speakers from diverse disciplines, introduced enriching ideas and engaged the audience in discussions about the importance of embracing change and staying ahead amidst a fast-moving and ever-evolving environment.
Mr. Frédéric Meuwly, Founder and Managing Director of Actitudes Coaching, kickstarted the event by sharing his experience as a “burnout survivor” and how to recognise the warning signs of personal exhaustion. He also discussed how applying a "Welcoming Disruption" approach can help one recognise trigger factors and ultimately avoid a burnout.
Ms. Alexandra Broennimann, a Researcher specialising in Consumer Behaviour, explored how the impact of technology is affecting the developing brain and behavioural patterns of Generation Z - the first generation of Digital Natives.
SHMS Lecturer and Researcher Mr.Chris Meylan reflected on his personal experience of introducing 1:1 iPad technolgy and paving the way for SHMS to becoming an Apple Distinguished School. He highlighted how technology when used thoughtfully, provides opportunities for a more innovative and effective learning experience.
Mr. Yves Givel, Vice President of Human Resources at Hyatt Hotels discussed how factors like globalisation, increased competition and technological advances, have driven leaders of forward-thinking organisations to create workplace environment that embraces and encourages change.
SHMS alumna and Content Manager at Kempinski Hotels, Ms. Carolina Koch shared her personal journey navigating through digital space and how she uses it to strengthen her relationships and not be influenced and defined by what others say.
The final speaker of the afternoon was Mr. Mathieu Jaton, CEO of Montreux Jazz Festival. He spoke about staying relevant in a dynamic and ever changing industry and how he transformed an icnonic event like the jazz festival, but yet remained committed to honouring the festival’s legacy which spans over 50 years.
